In CYPE Club Action Two, we invited Ms Nina Giles to talk about
how to protect yourself from racial discrimination. Nina Giles is a
former Equal Racial Council member advisor, and now a co-ordinator of
EYSIP (Edinburgh Youth Social Inclusion Partnership). She has enormous
experiences on the subject. As a British Chinese, she also has deep
understanding of the difficulties we are facing.

Nina Giles talked about two important legislations that are related to
racial discrimination, Race Relation Act 1976 and Race Relation
(Amendment) Act 2000, emphasising on two concepts introduced in Race
Relation (Amendment) Act 2000, General Duty and Specific Duty of the
employers.
Having worked for Racial Equality Council for five years, Nina Giles
has many practical experiences in resolving racial
discrimination-related complaints and disputes in employment. She
explained the steps should be taken if anyone feels being racially
discriminated at workplace or even immediately after the selection of
job applications.
For many people, without knowing their rights and where to get help,
choose to remain silent when facing discrimination. So having the
knowledge of laws and sources of support is essential for us to
protect ourselves.
Nina Giles's talk was very informative and helpful.
It reflected as an absolutely enlightened and beneficial evening.
